The U.S. Government’s Irresponsible Spending Has To Stop

by Guest Author on July 2, 2010

People still talk about the 2009 stimulus bill even though it was passed over a year ago. While it is still in the news almost every week, many people don’t seem to understand that it was there to give aid to large businesses as well as state governments. There was nothing in it for the average guy on the street.

The only way to have benefited from that legislation is to have gotten a newly created job that came about because of the stimulus bill. You might also have gotten some better terms for your mortgage but there was nothing where you were going to get cash from the government. If people thought they could qualify for a government grant they could have applied to one, but those grants weren’t any bigger or easier to get than they always were.

Even though the stimulus plan was passed over a year ago, people continue to find it tough going economically. The bill has done nothing to lower the unemployment rate and people are still as fearful today of losing their jobs as they were last year. This makes one wonder what was really accomplished with the 787 billion dollars that the US taxpayers now owe?

Whenever huge sums of dollars are talked about like that, there is always a group of people who think the government is just giving away money. They might have gotten that perception from the Bush stimulus bill that sent checks to many households in the country to try to spur on the economy and get spending going. People will forever hope that a similar check will come in the mail and that they will be given more free money.

There has never been anything such as free money that doesn’t come with some sort of a cost. Ultimately, people who pay taxes are the ones that will be responsible for this debt and it is too bad that so many in our society have escaped paying taxes. If everyone where responsible for this debt, there would be a greater chance that people would rebel and stop lawmakers from putting up deeper in debt year after year.
